Seeing our Mothers, Fathers, Babies and Families Flourish

Our Pasifika Maternity and Child Health Hub opened on 14th April 2020. We are honoured to serve our Pasifika (Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia) communities in Logan to support healthy live births. The clinic runs from Monday to Friday 9.00am to 4.00pm. Mothers are supported by a named midwife throughout her pregnancy, a community connector, as well as an onsite Obstetrician (Tuesdays). This project was only made possible through the collaboration of community, government, non-government, private sector, philanthropic, and metro south heath hospital. We are grateful and thankful for all those who helped bring this valuable community led initiative to life.

Our Journey

Recent research conducted by Metro South Health shows that around one quarter of all birthing women presenting at Logan Hospital are from a Maori and Pasifika cultural background. Pasifika women in Logan also have twice the rate of gestational diabetes, lower numbers of visits and higher rates of no antenatal care compared to the general population in Logan including higher rates of preterm small gestational age babies.

The Pasifika Maternity Hub began as a collaborative initiative led by Logan Together (a long term whole of community campaign aimed at improving the outcomes of children aged 0-8 years in Logan). The Logan Community Maternity Services project commenced in March 2016 building relationships between health care providers, consumer advocates, academics and community members in Logan to collectively address the challenge of achieving improved health outcomes for Maori and Pasifika women. The primary focus of the project was to improve access to the experience of support, healthcare and parent education services for parents from early in pregnancy, through to birth, and initially up to the first six weeks of a baby’s life. The main strategy of the project was to provide relationship-based long term continuity of midwifery care across pregnancy, labour, birth and post birth and to provide this within a highly localised community setting that offers connection to a wide range of other supports and positive community experiences

The Pasifika Maternity and Child Health Hub opened its doors on 14th April 2020. It is one of four hubs in Logan and is serviced by 6 midwives and Community Connectors. It provides a range of pre-natal, intra-partum and post birth/transition support services delivered from community settings that are currently accessed by Pasifika people. The hub provides a range of wrap around services including social services, mental health, family violence and Community Connector program.
